After controlling for attractions and sexual practices, homophobia predicted straight identification in all groups. Among both groups of women, one femininity attitude and motherhood also predicted straight identification. This paper also uses two waves of Add Health, a representative survey of young adults, to examine change to sexual identity over six years. Results show that among individuals who changed sexual identities between waves, heightened religiosity and political conservatism across waves were associated with increased odds of changing to a straight identity for women, but not for men. This suggests but does not prove a directional association between attitudes and identification for some individuals. This suggests that straight identification is due partly to embeddedness in straight culture and enjoyment of straight privilege, not simply homophobia. First, sexual orientation and sexual identity differ.

Many people are disturbed by their fantasies; the images can be embarrassing, repugnant, even unacceptably shocking. But it is perfectly coarse to have fantasies about sexual acts one has no intention of carrying out in reality. And our fantasies may contain scenes involving unlikely characters who are protagonists in scenarios so as to represent our deep desires — constant if we do not recognise how. If you identify with the female in your fantasy, it may austerely be that you experience arousal after you are connected with the central erotic concepts of the scene — for example, receiving penetration, being acquiescent and so on. Some men — gay or straight — like en route for role-play in vivo at being lady and receiving penetration, domination or castigation by a man or woman. Carry out trial if you wish, but do aim to accept that your fantasies are mysterious and private.

Tony Silva argues that these men — many of whom enjoy hunting, fishing and assassination guns — are not closeted, bisexual or just experimenting. After interviewing 60 of these men over three years, Dr. Silva found that they benefit from a range of relationships with erstwhile men, from hookups to sexual friendships to secretive loving partnerships, all although strongly identifying with straight culture. We spoke with Dr. Silva about his book. Why do straight-identified men allow sex with other men?
